A familiar yet endearing story of a troubled, young musician dreaming of something bigger than the New Jersey suburbs that both weigh her down and help form her identity. Without better care, Patti Cake$ might feel played out, but strong performances from Danielle MacDonald in the titular role, Bridget Everett as her trainwreck mom, and the supporting cast that round out Patti’s rap ensemble, give the movie the heart to keep audiences engaged in this underdog story.
