Second only to "Streetcar" as a film interpretation of a Tennessee Williams play. John Huston flips the play on it's ear as it becomes a dark comedy in his hands. Burton is , quite frankly, hilarious as Shannon and Ava Gardner really acts on film for the first time. The play was infamous as a vehicle for Bette Davis in the part Ava plays. On opening night she was greeted with applause at her entrance and proceeded to the stage edge to accept it; then went back to the play. Tennessee had an aneurism.
