Sally Hurst is going to Rhode Island to live with her father Alex and his new girlfriend Kim in the nineteenth century mansion they are restoring. While exploring the estate, Sally finds a hidden basement and accidentally lets loose a race of ancient, dark-dwelling creatures who conspire to drag her down into the mysterious house's bottomless depths. Before the evil lurking in the dark consumes them all, Sally must convince Alex and Kim that it's not a fantasy.

This remake isn't very good and doesn't begin to compare to the 1973 original. That original version was excellent (starring Kim Darby and Jim Hutton). I've requested it a number of times but BPL only ended up purchasing this one (which is kinda lame).

This film got a return of at least $24,000,000. I suspect that producer Guillermo Del Toro was giving the director his first chance at directing. Maybe he will make a good movie in the future. I watched it because Roger Ebert gave it 3.5 stars out of 4.0. I cannot agree.

i love Guillarmo Del Toro's vision and visually speaking this movie is no let down. That being said, his movies are never really horror but rather fairy tales for adults. So if you are looking to be scared, pass this one up. that being said, this is not my favorite of his films. i fould it ok. but nothing to really write home about.

I think Alex and Kim know that Sally knows that this is no fantasy.

The movie is rated R, but the *only* feasible target audience that would possibly find this pile of manure appealing would be adolescents. Now THAT makes a lot of sense! Awful movie. Awful. Co-writer Guillermo del Toro must've needed a quick couple of bucks. ½ star for the little girl. She did a good job with the lousy material she had to work with. I would've added a star if those things did some oral surgery on Katie Holmes' pearly whites, though. Pity.

This wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen, it is far from being good. "I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.”

This movie too intense and scary for children, view first before letting them see it!
