Kicked off Ireland's police force for booze-related infractions, and now working as a private eye in Galway, forty-something Jack Taylor takes on cases the cops won't touch. Self-destructive, pigheaded, and overfond of the bottle, he is trying to reinvent himself in a community with a long memory and an uneasy attitude toward change. Set against the rugged backdrop of western Ireland, this crime-noir series depicts a country in transition, caught between the certainties of the past and the anxieties of a post-bubble future. Based on the bestselling crime fiction by Ken Bruen.

Love Iain Glen. Great actor. Very gritty series.

Not entertaining...just blood and guts...akin to public hangings.

This is not your idealistic, admirable sleuth. Quite the contrary. But he is diligent, intuitive and relentless. Murder and mystery shrouded in darkness and an alcoholic haze. Iain Glen leads a good cast with good performances. The stories are not complex and you may get ahead of Jack as he solves them, but, all in all, its a good watch. I give this series an 8 (good) out of 10. [Criminal Mystery]

Rated 6/10. Better than average, but could have been much better. There was too much focus on the main character's habit of drinking alcohol, which got boringly predictable after a while.

Overall, the three episodes were okay. The last story, "The Magdalen Martyrs", was the best though, with a terrific plot, and nice twists.

Now, if they could have it so Jack Taylor doesn't get beat up every 5 minutes, that would be great. He seems to be too easy to sneak up on.

There is a Set 2 and Set 3 available in our library system. Hopefully, the character has evolved a bit in these series.

I found the first of three episodes to be depressing as all-get-out. There was not one uplifting moment. Plus it is raining outside today and I got a leak in the bedroom that will have to have someone fix it. But that won't happen until next week.

In fact three 90-minutes TV films featuring Iain Glen (The tough Dragon Queen's most trusted warrior Jorah Mormont in "Game of Thrones") a ruggedly handsome, amiable yet damaged Irish private investigator who was once a "Guard" Sargent before he punched a Minister's lights out during a traffic stop. How's that not an alluring and endearing premise? Thoroughly enjoyed this hard boiled gumshoe series but I am a fan of Ken Bruen's novels and films based on his work. Anyway, back to the three films: "The Guards 2010," "The Pikemen 2011" and close to home "The Magdalen Martyrs 2011."

Good storyline, not as good acting, too much alcohol induced not delirium scenes reduce the detective job's credibility.
Good entertainment.

Mostly good, but by the end of the third disc, one is a little tired of his drinking. Has subtitles, but most of the dialogue is clear enough for people in the US to follow without having to read every line. Some violence, but not overwhelming; some foul language, but not lots, and somehow it just doesn't sound as bad with an accent. The stories are sound and there are some surprises each episode.

Gritty and suspenseful. Highly recommended.

We enjoyed Iain Glen in Downton Abbey so thought we'd give this a try. However, because of a dull script and lackluster directing we turned it off after 20 minutes. The story just never got off the ground. Similar to the San Diego Chargers, it's not worth spending valuable time on something that's simply not entertaining. Inspector George Gently, Wallander, Case Histories, and Shetland are better examples of British police/detective shows.
