First time reading a Hazel Gaynor book. Was intrigued... But am now disappointed. Good read, but it just lacks some "humpf". I love that she has brought forth the reality of female lighthouse keepers, but this book just fell short for me. Good as a "mindless" summer read.

Although a bit slow to start, this book centers around the lives of two women -- Grace Darling in 1838 and Matilda Emmerson in 1938. With lighthouse keeping as the thread that ties these women together, both make difficult but different journeys. Grace finds herself plunged into unwelcome fame when she rescues people from the wrecked Forfarshire during a storm. Matilda has been exiled to America from Ireland when she finds herself pregnant and unmarried by a British soldier stationed in Ireland. Interspersed with the details of lighthouse keeping. the author skillfully interweaves the two stories while uncovering the artifacts and mystery that links these two women across a hundred years.

This was a very engaging story about very strong women based on historical facts. While the story may seem "light" as you are reading, the depth of the facts when you do some research are amazing. Grace Darling was a real hero in her day. Loved the characters in this book, it would make a great book club read.

I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end. If the characters and story can make me cry I’ve been taken in and, for me, that’s what reading a good novel is about.
Realizing women were doing this job so early on helped me, once again, to embrace my gender and independence.
I’ve never read this author before but will be looking for other books she’s written.
