Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read

With the same suppleness, energy, and range of voices that won their translation of The Brothers Karamazov the PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Prize, Pevear and Volokhonsky offer a brilliant translation of Dostoevsky's classic novel that presents a clear insight into this astounding psychological thriller. I believe it is one of the best novels of all time because of its ability to describe the human condition so adeptly. The crime itself is not the main theme; the inner turmoil and tormented psychology of a guilty person is, and makes for a fascinating read. The social disenfranchisement, the poverty in St. Petersburg, the struggles of ordinary people all say so much. Russian names and nicknames can be tricky so spark notes always help in keeping the characters straight. A fascinating story.
