I wanted to like this film as the scenery and acting were great. it's just that the behavior and reactions of the characters were unrealistic, which made the plot less believable. I wonder if the book portrayed the characters to have more insight and intellect in regards to informed decision making?

Too commercial - not as true to the story as the Alan Bates one

Wow. We really really loved this. Fantastic performances in a story about pride, loss and love. I will admit there were lots of tears as the final credits rolled.

Once I saw this movie, I became a huge fan of Ciaran Hinds. What makes Hinds brilliant & Hardy's character so engaging: is that he is flawed & human. You can empathize with his situation & understand his motivations- even when he makes the wrong choices (which he does again and again). The supporting cast is also tremendous, particularly his daughter, portrayed by Jodhi May. I was unprepared for the ending & admit I cried uncontrollably. Not many movies have moved me the way that Mayor of Casterbridge did, and I doubt anyone could outshine Mr. Hinds performance.
