This is an excellent movie that keeps you on dread-filled, uneasy toes. It doesn't go for cheap scares or jumpy editing. You're never sure what is going to happen next - OR WHEN! Your imagination is brought into play. And Your Individual Imagination Can Conjure Up WORSE Things That Any Hokey "Ooo, Look! A Gooey-Faced Ghost! Yuk!" Can Do! An Example Of Why I Highly Recommend This Film? The scene where Radcliffe is standing in the night-shroud front room, blackness all around him. Suddenly he looks to the left! A moment later, his head turns back to resume reading what's before him. Usual 'new-and-improved' dictates there's the gory boogy-bugger behind him! But what you see is a thousand times worse and an alert to what you're in for: the entrance hall illuminated by a bright lamp. For a moment you're confused. Then you realize the truth: before his head turned, obscuring your view, SOMETHING WAS STANDING IN THE DOORWAY BEHIND HIM, BLOTTING OUT THE LIGHT! Just remember one fact and all is clear: The Woman In Black Will NEVER Forgive!

Daniel Radcliffe gracefully moves on past any Harry Potter stereotyping in this excellent psychological thriller (as opposed to bloody gore). He plays a grief-shocked, recently widowed attorney who's sent to sort through a dead client's belongings. He finds letters from the dead that start to reveal a heartwrenching injustice and sees a ghost: a mysterious, angry woman. The client's foreboding house is in the foggy dark woods, tides periodically cutting it off from the mainland and creating dangerous quicksand. The mainlanders are oddly hostile and protective of their children. Ciaran Hinds plays the only welcoming native—also with his own tale of grief—who tries to help as the mystery deepens. Creative and intense ending as they race against time.

I agree with @ledias that it's a shame the movie is not in line with the book. Some things missing out like the beginning Christmas celebration where they gather at the fireplace to share ghost stories. It wasn't all entirely bad of course, just that I wish they would've added MORE to the movie from the book.

The movie really does a good job of recreating the book's haunted house and the horrifying environment. Graphic and vivid images are consistently throw at the young lawyer (Daniel Radcliffe). Daniel is already familiar with ghost and mythical events in Harry Potter, so his performance is very persuading.

Wow, after reading several of the comments I guess my husband and I are in the minority. We liked the movie very much.

We haven't seen the original version (which incidentally stars the actor who played 'James Potter'), but felt there was enough 'creep' factor to keep it going, and the acting is fabulous, not only by Daniel Radcliffe and Ciaran Hinds, but supporting cast as well.

Sure, the movie may have had some predictable aspects to it, but people really expect too much these days. Use your imagination, stop relying on so many visual effects (yep, like the 'olden' days) and you just might find the story a little creepier than you expected.

Surprised at how much I liked this movie. Not really scary per se, but very creepy. Daniel Radcliffe was very good and was good enough that I didn't think the movie was Harry Potter in a haunted house. Sad story though with good acting, music, and scenes that made me jump. Liked the old-time setting too. Worth watching for sure. Wasn't this movie based on a play? I seem to recall 25 years ago seeing this as a play at the Grand Theatre in London and recall it was a scary play too. But maybe I'm wrong.

Surprisingly, I like it more than "The Amazing Spider-Man", which bored me after 15 min of watching, nothing new, sometimes very boring, I mean spider-man.
"Woman in Black" was keeping my attention and was not boring at all. However, no happy-end :-)
