Bechdel's drawing style is compelling especially with the odd perspectives she often uses. This book feels over-analytical, which is probably what she was aiming for.

After reading The Secret to Superhuman Strength, I thought I'd try Bechdel's other books. I enjoyed the excellent drawing, the layered meta-ness of it, and the subject material of psychoanalysis, human development, and parent-child…

Fun Home was one of my favourite reads and normally I wouldn't compare an author's work, but this one is to closely attached to Fun Home that it's hard not to. I was so excited to be able to dive back into this story and find out more…

Are You My Mother? asks many questions through its beautifully crafted drawings that carry a staged rawness to them (not in a bad way!). Not only does the reader see the deeply personal questions that Bechdel grapples with as she explores…

I can definitely appreciate this memoir by Alison Bechdel.. but seeing as I don't buy into psychologist Donald Winnicott's theories, I can't relate well to Ms. Bechdel's psychological insights.

Not comedy, though it has funny moments. It's a book for the academically inclined. The artistic graphic "comic" works extremely well for the complicated story the author relates. It is an extremely personal depiction of the author's…

Are You My Mother? A Comic Drama is Alison Bechdel’s memoir about her relationship with her mother and her therapists and about writing Fun Home. Because it’s about writing the previous book and how much her mother didn’t like that she’d…

I liked Fun Home a bit better, but I still enjoyed this thoughtful exploration of the author's mother and how their connection played out in other parts of her life.

A clever introduction to psychoanalysis and a brave exploration of the author's own relationship with her mother.

Bechdel's second graphic novel memoir focuses in on her relationship with her mother and her years in therapy. She writes in a wonderful, self-reflexive and analytic style, and the work is full of masterful drawing and interesting literary…

I didn't love this book. There was too much focus on psychoanalyst Winnicott and author Virginia Wolfe. I wasn't overly interested in the history of these two people. Every chapter started with a dream sequence, then Bechdel would…

A few days after reading Fun Home (by the same author), I randomly found this book at the library, and checked it out. This is the perfect followup to Fun Home. It was well researched, beautifully drawn, and remarkably easy to understand,…

I like the style, artwork, and tone, but the story gets a bit too introspective/self analytic for me. I couldn't finish it.

i was intrigued by the title so i checked it out. although the art was good, i was disappointed. it is a very self-absorbed text and who really wants to read near-transcripts of someone's therapy sessions? this goes on for many pages. also…

I love Alison Bechdel's other graphic memoir, "Fun Home" and that's why I looked forward to reading "Are You My Mother?" I was disappointed. Where "Fun Home" draws the reader into the world and mind of its creator and her father by…

Another book to prove that the graphic narrative form is a brilliant way to write autobiography. But this account of Alison Bechdel's relationship with her mother is not really about her mother, but about her relationship with herself. …

Bechdel is the author of the amazing graphic memoir "Fun Home" in which she explores her relationship with her closeted homosexual father. Here she focuses on her relationship with her mother. Introspective, insightful, witty, and…

Just the very best. An exploration of how trauma ripples down generations in a family and how self-expression is the only real means of breaking the cycle. I'm not doing it justice. Bechdel examines herself with an artist's eye,…

Not an easy read, but a very important one, as the culture of therapy and analysis slowly spreads beyond the couch and the counselling room. A fine portrayal of the mysterious depths, bewildering challenges and helpful potential of inner…

Alison Bechdel is a comics pioneer. I loved the collections of her comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For, and Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, which was a break-through work in comic culture featuring two of my favourite themes; death and…

As others have said, this book is much less interesting than Fun Home. I found the psychoanalytic stuff tedious, in fact. But it is beautifully drawn.

Are you my mother? has Alison exploring her difficult relationship with her mother – she can’t find in her Mom the motherly support she wants. It is a layered, complex and touching story that any son or daughter will recognise. She…

This is my first graphic novel, and I have to say, I ended the book with the same opinion of graphic novels I started with--what's all the fuss about? This book would have been uninteresting without graphics and it was uninteresting with…
